Maximizing Practice: Getting Better at Every Level of Rowing – The Crew Stop
From the Coach’s Launch: Sue Parvin
Now that it’s mid- August, many of you are probably feeling stronger, better at your technique and have developed a bond with many of the people that you row with, which is a good thing!
Crew, being the ultimate team sport feeds that togetherness - rowing as one unit.
As a coach, I am particularly focused on the technique of the rowing stroke. The better that you become at sequencing the stroke, it seems that it takes less effort to complete the cycle of the stroke. You develop that feeling of boat flow and glide. This is a good thing to keep in mind as we go into more of our regatta season.
At a regatta, the adrenaline kicks in, we tend to tense up and feel every little nuance in the boat. As a coach, I want you to enjoy the aspect of competition. Some things that I like to impart to my racing crews before the race are to hydrate really well and get a good night’s sleep the night before! The day of the regatta, eat sensibly, warm up before your race, and listen to your coxswain! If you are rowing without a coxswain, know the course.
As you go to the start, remember to “Keep calm and carry on!”
That means have a plan and do your best to carry it out. Find the mantra that helps you in these situations, whether it’s a pep talk to yourself, visualization of the race, music, etc. Talk to others about their experiences. Then put forward your best performance!
Planning always helps reduce the jitters of racing. My bottom line to athletes racing is always “Do your best and have fun!” Good luck to all of you racing this season!
Cheers, :)
Coach Sue Parvin

Meet member Mya Anderson
In her own words:
What brought you to the sport of rowing?
I moved to Leelanau County in 2021 from Madison, Wisconsin after decades of visiting my parents here. My husband and I live here now year-round. My dad was a boat builder and fascinated by all means of moving on water, and I think of him especially when I row. I have always been drawn to the water, so perhaps with my Nordic/Viking heritage and Aquarius sign, this was written in the stars. NMRC member Emma Rosi, however, was the magic catalyst. She said to me with her typical enthusiastic conviction, “Mya, you should row with us! You would love it!” So I started last November by attending winter rowing on the ergs at the Sleeping Bear Bay Club in Maple City.
What does rowing mean to you?
Rowing is a chance for me to learn something completely new at 56 with an outstanding group of individuals! I was a gymnast as a kid and never shied away from physical activity, but I did not participate in team sports in high school or college, so I love that opportunity now. Rowing lets me put the rest of my life on hold to revel in all the sensations of individual movement and the interdependence of the crew in the boat. It quiets and calms my mind even on windy, wavy days. I crave it and am always looking forward to the next chance to grab my rowing bag and get ready to go.
What has been a rowing challenge ?
NMRC is welcoming and supportive, and I enjoy being coached. My particular challenge is creating time to row while still enjoying my other beloved warm-weather activities while also working full time. I love gardening with native plants, kayaking, canoeing, SUPing, sailing our Sunfish, hiking, and backpacking.
What rowing goal have you set for yourself?
My goal for this year was to work up to a solid baseline foundation in all the aspects of rowing- starboard sweep, port sweep, and sculling. Right now I am having some carpal tunnel and right wrist rotation issues that are getting in the way of that goal, but coaches have been helpful and supportive. I am headed to Grand Rapids for the Beer City event to fill a starboard seat, so rowing in a regatta is my new goal this year!

Supporting our club is always in season!
We are a volunteer, member-run 501c3 organization, and depend on donations to sustain our club. Membership fees go toward overhead costs and staff (coaches and coxswains). All equipment repair and upgrades are supported by the generous donations of our community.
Charitable donations can also be made via RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) contributions if one is retired and/or reached the age where one must take their RMD. Making donations this way may reduce your tax burden. Contact your own financial advisor.
NMRC is now registered to receive donations via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) from Fidelity Charitable. If you have investments with Fidelity, it is an easy and secure way to make donations.
