Hello NMRC!

We are half way through our summer session and headed into a very busy August! We hope everyone is having lots of great rows this season. One novice rower shared that the peace and focus she finds rowing on beautiful Lake Leelanau is spilling over into her personal life. Rowing is magic! Tell a friend.

Upcoming Regattas

NMRC members are preparing for an exciting regatta season!

NMRC is sending 13 rowers to the The Beer City Sprints in Grand Rapids. The race is on Saturday, August 16. Joe has posted the line ups on the oar house doors and we’re starting to add practice times for the various boats. We will be de-rigging and loading the trailer on Thursday evening, August 14 after practice. Bring your tools and help out if you can at about 7:30 pm. This counts towards volunteeer hours.

There are currently 9 NMRC rowers signed up for the Iron Oars Regatta in Marquette MI on Saturday, August 23 and there is room for a few more to join if you can commit within the next week or so. Daniel will be sending out an email about the Marquette regatta soon. Let him know if you want to join the fun! De-rigging and loading for Marquette is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, August 21at about 7:30 pm after practice. The trailer will return to Solon late Sunday night on August 25.

There’s still time to sign up for the Henley on the Boardman (TACR); Traverse City MI on September 13! This is a super fun regatta!

Even if you are not racing, please consider volunteering to helpde-rig and load boats on Thursday August 14 and Thursday August 21 after those evening rows. There will be more rigging opportunities when the trailer returns from the races, so please help if you can. Rowers not attending the regattas should be aware that there will be a fewer boats available at Solon during those weekends.

Novice Program

The novice program is going strong and building skills. There are 13 summer session novice rowers with 5 signed up to row at the Beer City Sprints in Grand Rapids! Novice rowers are cranking up regatta energy and practicing racing starts! This is awesome!

Thank you to Sue Parvin and Dana Fear who installed all new oarlocks and some bigger shoes in the Decidor 8 for a better feel and fit for our novice rowers.

Guest Rower

Guest rower Lauren Johnson stroked NMRC 4x along side the Thursday evening Novice 8+. Lauren is a rising senior at Charlotte Youth Rowing in North Carolina. Lauren has competed in many regattas including the 2023 Youth National Championships. Her mom rode along in the safety launch with Coach Dana.

Lauren is an Ambassador for Stem to Stern — a national program that seeks to provide access to rowing to kids who would not normally have access to the sport, gives the kids swim lessons, and STEM classes and training. Via Instagram Lauren wrote, “Had such a great time. Thanks for having me!”

Founding Member makes National News

NMRC founding member, Melissa Dow of Glen Arbor, her mother, Susan Sunda, Melissa’s brother Mark Hood, and Melissa’s daughters, Amanda and Rachel Dow, are all featured in the July 17 addition of Rowing News!

Susan caught one mistake in the article … she actually won nationals in a pair not a double!

Volunteer Corner

Thank you to Larry Schillinger for mowing the boat yard! It looks great. We also had a good crew to re-rig Barrymore to a four after one of its quad riggers broke in the middle of a power ten. Barrymore made it to shore safely and thank you to Daniel Schillinger for taking the rigger to a welder.
